The best scenario if your chosen domain name is unavailable will be if the current owner has stopped using that name due to lack of interest or changed to something else, with this name owners you can actually buy the domain name for very little fee.
Another option for these problems is to check if the owner hasn’t renewed their registration for quite some time.
